This part-time Online Distance Learning programme will support graduates in becoming clinical and academic leaders in the field of Critical Care with a qualification from a world top 100 university.

The programme is delivered online. It consists of 12 core courses.
Learning is done exclusively via a state-of-the-art Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) with emphasis on the research and governance principles which underpin contemporary practice, as well as leadership and management skills.
The courses in Year 1 are designed to introduce the academic skills required to complete the course and apply evidence based practice.
The students will also start the in depth exploration of core clinical subjects in Critical Care and begin to produce independent reports/essays for submission online.
In Year 2 students will further enhance their knowledge of core Critical Care subjects and be introduced to leadership & management principles as well as clinical governance and quality Improvement in Critical Care.
In Year 3, students will write a dissertation around a topic of their choice allowing them to use the skills of academic enquiry learned.
There will be opportunities to discuss clinical cases, policies, management pathways, research and other aspects with world leaders in the field of Critical Care education and the opportunity to form professional ties with them.
This programme is open to doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals and ultimately leads to a Masters degree.
The clinical components acquired and attained during this programme make graduates very desirable for prospective employers.

This course will cover the concept of severity scoring, predicted mortality, standardised mortality ratios and National bench-marking in Critical Care as well as the use of Morbidity and Mortality reviews for learning and education. The principles of quality improvement and clinical audit will also be discussed. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Apply critical analysis of the evidence surrounding issues and conditions which are related to the causality of AKI 2. Identify and critically appraise published literature in relation to diagnosis and management of AKI Be able to identify complex issues and make informed judgments in relation to the management of critically ill patients with AKI including RRT

Critically evaluate ICU performance in comparison to national and international standards. 2. Apply management strategies in response to common problems and issues arising in Critical Care practice. Demonstrate how to implement change and improve quality of Critical Care with particular reference to clinical audit
This course will examine the emergencies related to the gastrointestinal system including acute hepatic failure, acute severe pancreatitis, and abdominal surgical emergencies. The course will also explore the evidence underpinning best practice in diagnosing and managing patients with these conditions. The course aims to give participants the opportunity to develop a critical knowledge of gastrointestinal emergencies, how they develop and the ways in which patients with these conditions are managed. The course will provide students with the ability to confidently discuss the support provided in Critical Care for patients with these conditions gaining the ability to apply these principles to their everyday practice.
This course will introduce students to the concepts of effective leadership and management in health care. Students will be encouraged to think critically about leadership and management strategies helping them to become clinical and academic leaders within their own departments. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Critically discuss theories of leadership and management and their application in the context of Critical Care 2. Critically analyse strategies and approaches to problem solving and decision making within the health and social care environment Apply extensive knowledge of leadership and managerial skills to their own practice
This course will examine the published literature underpinning the practice of the sub-specialty, Neurocritical Care. The aetiologies of common presentations of patients to Neurocritical Care will be explored as well as the principles of management of this group of patients. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Apply critical analysis of the evidence surrounding issues and conditions which present to Neurocritical Care 2. Identify and critically appraise published literature in relation to diagnosis and management in Neurocritical Care Identify complex issues and make informed judgments in relation to the management of patients in Neurocritical Care
This course will cover the topic of human nutrition in Critical Care exploring the published literature evidencing the importance of nutrition and its contribution to the aetiology and progression of disease. The course will introduce the evidence for the use of optimum nutrition plans in a Critical Care environment and their influence on patient outcomes. By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate and discuss the impact of nutrition on disease and patient outcomes in Critical Care 2. Formulate patient management plans which optimise nutrition Critically analyse and compare the published evidence around the various methods of providing nutrition to critically ill patients
This course will cover the broad topic of scientific research and writing skills. It will start with the principles of scientific enquiry and study design. Systematic literature searches will be covered as well as basic statistics. Examples of published research in the field of Critical Care will be explored and critically appraised for relevance, validity, bias and applicability. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice scientific writing skills. By the end of this course students will be able to: • Conduct literature searches and critically appraise literature in the field of Critical Care to make informed judgements about the strength of published literature • Critically discuss research methods and important elements of study design Compose and articulate well structured scientific arguments in written and oral form
The aim of this course is to provide the student with a detailed insight into respiratory system failure. This will include physiology, pathophysiology of key conditions leading to respiratory failure and diagnosis. In addition it will cover state of the art management of respiratory failure in a Critical Care environment including advanced mechanical ventilation and Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). By the end of this course students will be able to: 1. Explain fundamental principles of respiratory physiology. 2. Evaluate pathophysiological processes which lead to respiratory failure. 3. Identify and critically appraise published literature in relation to diagnosis and management of respiratory failure. 4. Demonstrate an awareness of complex issues and make informed judgments in relation to the management of critically ill patients with respiratory failure.
This course will provide the student with a detailed insight into sepsis. As one of the leading causes of death worldwide, an understanding of sepsis is fundamental to Critical Care practice. The evolution of the consensus definitions for sepsis will be explored followed by essential pathophysiology, microbiology, clinical diagnosis and principles of management using the current literature. By the end of this course students will be able to: • Describe in detail the pathophysiology of sepsis • Formulate sophisticated judgments in relation to the diagnosis and management of septic patients • Critically appraise contemporary definitions of sepsis • Critically discuss the evolution of the surviving sepsis guidelines • Apply critical evaluation, analysis and synthesis to issues which are at the forefront of the management of sepsis
This course covers the topic of trauma beginning with common mechanisms of injury and the pathophysiology of multi-organ failure in major trauma. The systematic approach to managing patients with life threatening injuries, potential complications and ongoing care in the Critical Care setting will be explored. By the end of this course, students will be able to: • Apply critical analysis and synthesis of evidence related to mechanisms of injury and how these lead to multi-organ failure and death • Critically evaluate, consolidate and extend knowledge in relation to the role of Critical Care in managing patients who have sustained major trauma Formulate ideas to advance the diagnosis and management of trauma in their local professional setting
