Our Online Assessment in Education programme blends theory, research, practice and policy, while exploring the relationship between assessment and the promotion of social justice. Our teaching staff have been employed in the development of national policy in assessment, and theyre committed to social justice.
During this programme, you will reflect on and critique theory, cutting-edge research and current policies and practice in assessment and consider the impact of these on social justice. You will also have opportunities to collaborate and network with peers from a variety of work contexts and locations, to support critical reflection, peer and self-assessment.

This programme addresses significant needs for local, national and international students who are already teachers and policy makers. It will build a network of graduates who have high-level knowledge, skills, and capabilities in assessment. The knowledge, skills and academic and professional standing gained will enable you to contribute effectively to local and national policy making in your own context. You will also be well equipped to undertake further study through Doctoral research.
You will take four core and two optional courses across years 1 and 2. In year 3 you complete a piece of independent research, normally in the form of a Dissertation. The programme is fully delivered online using innovative technologies within a fully supported and interactive learning environment.

You’ll complete a guided enquiry project focusing on a specific aspect of education of professional/personal relevance. If you’re on a named pathway, you will undertake a Dissertation study relevant to that pathway.
This course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to successfully undertake and evaluate research and professional enquiry featuring qualitative, quantitative or mixed-methods research. The course has a strong practical orientation and formative activities are directly related to the summative assignments.
This course promotes critical engagement with current discourses on uses of assessment for improvement and accountability. You’ll critically review relevant contested theories and research evidence, and apply this learning to evaluate policy and practice, particularly in your own context. You will share your experience, reflection, thinking and skills with others as members of a distance learning community. You’ll be supported by the formative use of self-, peer- and tutor assessment. A final assignment assesses course attainment.
Through critical review of literature and critical reflection on practice, including your own, you will develop your understanding of the relationships among assessment processes, curriculum and pedagogy. You’ll examine in depth the key roles of inquiry-based learning and assessment in understanding what learners are learning, determining next steps in learning and informing means of progression. You’ll apply your learning to your own context, taking account of issues of social justice. As a member of a collaborative learning community, you’ll be supported by the formative use of self-, peer- and tutor-assessment. A final assignment assesses course attainment.
This course provides an introduction to major theoretical frameworks and research approaches in assessment. Content focuses on the three purposes of assessment: formative, summative, and for improvement and accountability. As you consider issues related to the impact of assessment policy and practice on social justice, you will draw on and review your own experience and practice. As a member of a collaborative learning community, you’ll be supported by the formative use of self-, peer- and tutor-assessment. A final assignment assesses course attainment.
This course focuses on critical engagement with international trends, underpinning values and theories which impact on decisions on policy and practice in curriculum, assessment and pedagogy. Drawing on knowledge of practice and policy in familiar and unfamiliar contexts, you will analyse recent powerful influences on issues of student and teacher agency, equity and student competences.
During this course, you’ll critically explore the complexities of the inter-relationship amongst curriculum, assessment and pedagogy as experienced through the eyes of learners. You’ll learn about ecological theories and perspectives on learners, learning and communities, and engage in critical discourse about tensions that exist across curriculum, assessment and pedagogy and the experiences of learners in a variety of policy and practice contexts.
In this course, you’ll develop your understanding of the principal theoretical approaches to test and examination design, of research into factors affecting the validity of tests and examinations and of means of optimising validity. In the light of research, policy and practice in testing, you’ll examine implications for social justice of different approaches.
You’ll develop in depth your critical knowledge and understanding of current theories and research in relationships between assessment in school and the promotion of social justice. As you identify, propose, examine and evaluate likely developments in assessment policy and practice, you’ll draw on and review your own experience and practice.

A 2.1 Honours degree or non-UK equivalent qualification in any subject
If English is not your first language, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. This is an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no sub-test less than 6. If you do not have an IELTS test certificate, equivalent scores in other recognised qualifications may be accepted
