Courses

During the first year, there are three compulsory courses. Then, in the second year, students will choose two courses from three blocks (making a total of six courses).

In the third year, students will undertake a dissertation, and there are two different options for this:

- On the MSc HPE programme, the dissertation will require a systematic review, synthesis and critique of the literature, to produce a policy document, a set of practitioner guidelines, or a new theoretical model
- On the MSc HPE (with Research), the dissertation will be a standard report of empirical research, incorporating a critical literature review, methodology, analysis and interpretation of findings, and conclusions drawn

If you opt for the Research dissertation, you need to choose the courses marked with an asterisk (*).

  • MED5386Assessment in Health Professions20 Credits

    You will learn about various forms of assessment and will be able to select those most appropriate to measure acquisition or application of knowledge, skills and/or attitudes relevant to a health professions context. You will also learn about governance issues in relation to assessment, including standard-setting, grading and quality assurance measures.

  • MED5392Learning in Health Professions20 Credits

    You will identify and critique various theories of learning, and apply these theories to the design of learning in a health professions context. You’ll also identify and apply ways to enhance learning for yourself and for your students.

  • MED5397Teaching in Health Professions20 Credits

    Explore various teaching methods and examine the evidence base for their effectiveness. You will critique the appropriateness of these methods for facilitating the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by health professionals. You’ll also design novel teaching activities to implement in your professional context, while evaluating your own teaching practice to identify areas for enhancement.

    Identify, critique and apply various approaches to, and models for, designing a health professions curriculum. Additionally, you will identify the various stakeholders in a health professions curriculum and critically evaluate their impact.

    Find out how to design an education research project. Focus on the research topic and questions, appropriate methodologies and methods to address them. Discover appropriate methods of data analysis.

  • MED5389Evaluation of Courses and Curricula10 Credits

    Explore the theory and practice of course and curriculum evaluation, and how this impacts on the design, delivery and governance of courses and curricula.

  • MED5390Evidence in Education Research*10 Credits

    You will learn about different perspectives on the nature of knowledge and evidence. Then you will apply your new understanding to critique the evidence base for approaches to, and activities for, learning, teaching and assessment.

  • MED5391Leadership in Health Professions Education10 Credits

    This course covers the theory and practice of leadership in health professions education, while reflecting on how this applies in your professional context.

  • MED5393Managing the Health Professions Curriculum10 Credits

    You will learn about key issues in the management of a health professions curriculum and how these are impacted by factors such as institutional policies. You will be encouraged to reflect on your personal and professional practice in relation to policy and governance.

  • MED5394PResearch Dissertation*60 Credits

    Identify a topic and (a) research question(s) in health professions education; and design and conduct empirical research to address those questions. Critically analyse, interpret and discuss your findings, presenting these in the form of a written dissertation.

  • MED5395Simulation in Health Professions10 Credits

    Learn to identify and critique ways in which simulation may be used in the delivery of health professions education, in contexts of high and low resource. This will include the use of simulation in formative and summative assessment of clinical and communication skills.

  • MED5396Teaching and Assessment of Clinical Skills10 Credits

    Explore in greater detail the teaching and assessment of clinical skills. You will also learn about relevant issues in, and mechanisms for, governance.

  • MED5398Governance and Ethics in Education Research*10 Credits

    Learn about the governance and ethical conduct of education research. In addition, you will find out about the process of applying for ethical approval of education research.

  • MED5399PDissertation60 Credits

    Identify an issue and (a) research question(s) in health professions education; and systematically review, synthesise and critique relevant literature. Develop your intellectual and transferable skills whilst producing a tangible outcome, such as a policy document or guidelines for practitioners in their professional context.

Admissions Requirements

To be accepted to this programme, you must have:

  1. Prerequisite degree: Medical, veterinary, nursing, dental, biochemical or other health profession
  2. A relevant first degree, at least at 2.1 honours level, or equivalent (e.g. pass in a medical qualification) or a relevant first degree, at least at 2.2 honours level, or equivalent in addition to a minimum of six months’ work experience in public health or health care
  3. Exceptionally, if a first degree is not relevant then a professional qualification and experience in the practice of public health for at least two years at a professional level is required
  4. Work experience required
